Digestive health

Heartburn and indigestion are typically used interchangeably, but they’re two different conditions with similar, often overlapping symptoms.

Indigestion covers a range of digestive issues but is often a term used in place of Dyspepsia which is pain or discomfort in the abdominal area. Keep in mind that it’s also possible to experience both indigestion and heartburn at the same time.

What is heartburn & indigestion?

Heartburn

A burning sensation in the chest behind the breastbone.

Indigestion

Discomfort felt in the lower chest or upper abdomen.

Heartburn and indigestion are common and most people will

experience them at some point throughout their lives.

Heartburn is when the valve at the stomach entrance opens too often, causing stomach acid to travel up the food pipe, which causes discomfort and a burning sensation.

Indigestion is often caused by excess acid coming into contact with the sensitive lining of the stomach or oesophagus. This can cause a burning like sensation in your stomach, especially if your digestive lining is sensitive.

If medicines don’t help or your symptoms are severe, please seek advice from a doctor.
