Don’t know where to start?

Curly hair can pose a whole host of challenges in ensuring it looks its best from dryness and frizz, to weakness and lack of hold, to lack of definition and shine. Curly hair products are designed to tackle many curly hair challenges and understanding how to set up your washday to cater to your particular curly needs can transform your hair.

Start your curly hair journey by identifying your curl type from 2-4 (wavy, curly, coily). Wavy hair (type 2) consists of an S shape formation. Curly hair (type 3) is where the hair forms a full spiral ringlet curl and Coily hair (type 4) consists of cork screws and zig zags. This will help your product selection and application techniques. A, B and C refer to how wavy, curly or coily your hair pattern is. A is looser, C is tighter. You hair thickness or texture can also make a difference to which products are best for you. If you roll a single strand between your fingers, do you hardly feel anything (fine hair), feel it but only subtle (medium) or feel it clearly rotate in your fingers (coarse hair).

Once you’ve done that, a great washday routine can make all the difference to the look and health of your curls though and does not need to be complicated – we promise!

Step 1: Cleanse & Shampoo

Cleanse your hair with a shampoo to remove dirt, oil, and buildup from the scalp. Make sure your cleanser is made without sulphates, like Curlsmith, as sulphates can be a harsh cleansing agent for curly hair leaving it dry and brittle.

This is why Curlsmith Essential Moisture Cleanser is perfect for every washday and is suitable for all curl types and textures. Curlsmith Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash is a 2-in-1 that combines a conditioning base with a low amount of cleansing agents. We also recommend you deep cleanse every fourth or fifth washday to ensure you’re detoxing your scalp and removing all buildup.

Step 2: Condition

The role of the conditioner is to smooth the hair cuticles and restore a balance of moisture and shine. The ‘slip’ of the conditioner allows you to detangle whilst the hair is wet and avoids any breakage.

Try Curlsmith Multi-tasking Conditioner that can be used as a rinse-out, deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner to strengthen the hair. Use an intensive deep conditioner ideally once a week.

Step 3: Moisturise

Leave-in conditioners are essential to curly hair due to its drier texture and struggle to maintain moisture and nourishment in between washes. Apply a leave-in conditioner that will help further detangle and prepare the hair for styling. Find the lightest through to the most nourishing conditioner that suits your hair.

Try Curlsmith Weightless Air Dry Cream for defining the curls and moisturising the hair without weighing it down.

Step 4: Styling

How you choose your styler depends on your desired finish and your type of curls. Waves get easily weighed down so lightweight stylers will work best. Whereas coily hair will love gel and serum-like textures. By looking at the hold classification you will see a gradient from 1 to 10 that goes from soft hold to our strongest hold.

Our much-loved Curlsmith Curl Defining Styling Soufflé has a jelly texture that gives buildable hold and is protein-free (level 8 hold) and loved by all hair types.

Step 5: Treat

An optional fifth step includes a range of products that may not be needed every washday but can be extremely beneficial to include as and when your hair or scalp needs it.

The ‘must-have’ Bond Curl Rehab Salve targets all three hair bonds and strengthens your curls.
