How to get that winter glow and take it from day to night

Beauty is back! We’re joined by make-up legend Ruby Hammer and model Catherine, to show you how to create a radiant winter make-up look – and how to take it from day to night with the help of iridescent eyeshadows, cream blusher and sheer lipsticks.

Ruby shows us how to nail that luminous skin, juicy cheek and glossy lip glow using some of our favourite products.

Prep the skin

The secret to a winter glow can be found within your skincare. Start with a product that both primes and moisturises, such as the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, before going in with an oil, like the Clarins Santal Treatment Oil. Gently warm it in the palms of your hands before lightly dabbing onto the cheeks, forehead and chin.

Build your base

Take a luminous foundation – like No7 Hydraluminous Skin Perfector – and apply generously over the face and down your neck to help you achieve an even tone. Then, add a flush of colour back into your cheeks with a subtle blusher, like ICONIC London Sheer Blush.

Front cover

To keep your base nice and sheer, simply dab concealer on the areas of your face where you’d like a touch more coverage. Picking a product with a sponge applicator, like the Revlon ColorStay Skin Awaken 5 in 1 Concealer, gives you more control, too.

Eye-conic creams

Give your eyelids a wash of colour with neutral cream shadows. The Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Kiss From a Rose can be used all over the lid for a pale pink hue. Apply the product directly to the eyelid and use your finger to smudge it out, before creating a V-shape using a darker shade, like Rose Thorn on the outer corner of the eye to define the crease and add definition.

Get set

Apply translucent powder to set the cream products, paying particular attention to the under-eyes and centre of your face to stop any unwanted shine. The Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder ensures your make-up stays in place all day, too.

Bright eyes & brows

Use a soft brow powder, like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo, to fill in any sparse areas and define your arches. Add lashings of mascara to finish your eyes, working it into the root for extra definition. If you’re after limitless length, try Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara.

Shade & light

For warmth and definition, Benefit Hoola Contourist Palette is a great choice. Apply lightly to the underside of the cheekbones, along the jawline and the tip of the hairline. Then enhance the glow on your high points with fine highlighting powders, like Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette.

Let it lip

As your finishing touch to your daytime look, add a slick of your favourite nude lipstick. Choose a nourishing formula to help combat dry lips during the wintertime, such as Estée Lauder Pure Color Illuminating Shine Sheer Shine Lipstick in Imaginary 903.

Over the line

To take this look from day to night, it’s time to amp up the drama on your lids. Start with an eyeliner pencil, such as No7 Stay Perfect Eye Pencil in Black, and line the upper and lower waterlines to give a bit more intensity to your gaze.

Palette party

A cool-toned eye is the perfect partner to your dewy, winter skin. With a palette of cooler colours – e.l.f. Earth & Ocean Eyeshadow Palette has a wide variety of blue and green tones – sweep a metallic shade across your lids before adding detail in the outer corner and under the eye with a matte shadow. Finally, layer an iridescent shade in the inner corner and blend together until you have a nice, smooth finish. Add a few coats of mascara to really make your eyes pop.

Glow like a pro

Dust over another layer of highlighter from your Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette as a finishing touch to your base. To add some more colour and create a subtle contour, use a finely-milled powder like the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Light Catcher in Cosmic Rose.

Lips gone luxe

Complete your look with a natural, glossy pout. Line the lower lip with a cool-toned shade, like M.A.C’s Lip Pencil in Soar, before softening it gently with a brush. Add another layer of lipstick before popping lip-gloss on the cupids bow and lower lip for a lush glow from all directions – Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Diamond Milk will do just the trick.

And here is the finished look. Let’s get glowing!
