DOES YOUR SUNCREAM GIVE 5* UVA PROTECTION?
At Soltan, we are well aware of the dangers of UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, causing long-term skin damage and premature ageing. In 1992, Boots introduced the UK’s first (and only) UVA star rating system, which has become widely used across the industry, and all of our products have the highest 5 star UVA rating.
However, research we carried out in 2017 found that over half of parents choose a sun cream based only on its SPF rating, without realising the significance of the star rating system that indicates protection against long term, permanent skin damage caused by UVA.
We set out to change this, launching a controversial and thought-provoking campaign that aims to help parents understand the risk of exposing their family to UVA damage that is as permanent as a tattoo, if they use a sun cream with less than 5 star UVA protection.
Soltan believes that no child should ever suffer permanent skin damage caused by the sun and our campaign aims to make people aware that they need to check the UVA rating when choosing a sun cream. The Soltan campaign uses images of tattoos on children to highlight the permanency of UVA damage. Much like a tattoo is permanent on the skin, so is the damage caused by the UVA rays. By helping people realise the damaging and lasting effects of UVA rays, we hope that they will choose a sun cream that offers the highest 5 star UVA protection.
