What is incontinence?

Incontinence is when you pass urine unintentionally. There are several different types of incontinence; a common form is stress incontinence. This is when leaks occur because your bladder is under pressure, such as when you laugh, cough or sneeze. Another common type is urge incontinence: this is where you feel a sudden and uncontrollable urge to urinate. This can be a symptom of an overactive bladder.

Practice pelvic floor exercises – these are simple but can be really effective, because strengthening your muscles can help to improve your symptoms. The kegel exercise, as it’s also known, is taught by a specialist and involves clenching the muscles as if you were trying to hold in your wee. 

Prepare for trips out – where possible, be aware of the location of the toilets and facilities that are available where you’re going. If you’re planning a long car journey, make note of the service stations en route to your destination.

Make lifestyle changes – making healthy changes to your lifestyle, such as cutting down your caffeine intake or losing weight if you’re obese or overweight, can help to reduce the symptoms.
