Giving birth is likely to be one of the most magical, exciting experiences of your life. But whether you've been through it before or are about to become a mum for the first time, you'll know it's going to be a lot of hard work. The maternity TENS rental unit is an effective drug-free method helping to relieve pain during labour, which is safe for you and your baby.

What is a TENS machine?

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS machine sends tiny electrical impulses through your skin to your nerves through four electrode pads, which blocks the pain signals from your womb and cervix and encourages your body to release endorphins - its natural painkillers.

How do I rent a TENS machine?

If you'd like to hire a TENS machine, just pop into a Boots pharmacy to pick up a DVD pack. It costs €45 and a fully trained advisor will show you how the machine works and answer any questions you may have. When you're ready to book your machine, just call Babycare TENS on freephone 1800 937 376. They'll ask you for your credit card details as a deposit.

It's a good idea to pick up your DVD pack as soon as you can, so you have plenty of time to order your machine and get used to how it works. The hire period is six weeks, but if you need it longer, you can extend it by calling Babycare TENS on the freephone number. When you've finished using your machine, simply return it by post (return postage should cost you no more than €5).

How does a TENS machine work?

Here at Boots, we provide Elle TENS machines for you to hire. They use advanced technology to relieve pain during labour and beyond. All the settings are preset to make it easy to use. And there's also an extra reserve of power for when you really need it such as in the final stages of labour.

Handy and compact, you'll find a TENS machine really simple to use at home or in hospital. Just position the four self-adhesive electrode pads on your back and choose how much pain relief you need using the push-button, battery operated unit.

You should start to notice the effects of your TENS machine as soon as you switch it on. It lets you control your pain relief at all times - unlike some other pain relief methods, you can stop it at any time during your labour. You can also use a boost button to give you stronger relief when you need it, such as during contractions.
