Get skin care savvy: A guide to beautiful skin

We all need a chance to relax, unwind, rejuvenate and revitalise ourselves after the toll of a busy week. Follow the advice of our skincare experts and you'll be on your way to healthier, clearer-looking skin in no time.

Rule one: Cleanse - thoroughly

Think of cleansing as the ‘boring’ bit you can skip? Then stop. Without it, dirt, dead skin cells and impurities can interfere with the absorption of your favourite skincare products, and enhance lines and wrinkles, says Olay skin guru Anastasia Achilleos. Her secret is cleansing twice. “The first application picks up grease and loosens the make-up. The second cleanse allows a greater clean up of the skin, making sure everything is removed,” says Anastasia, who advocates massaging in your cleanser to kick-start lymph and circulation.

Rule two: Address radiance issues  

The secret of youthful-looking skin? It’s all about the 'glow'. “Young skin has plump, fresh cells which bounce back the light to create that natural glow,” says super-facialist Sarah Chapman. In contrast, ageing skin absorbs the light thanks to a slower cell turnover, which can leave your complexion looking flat, dull and prematurely aged. The solution? “Regular exfoliation, facial massage and an increase in your essential fat and omega intake,” says Sarah, who recommends exfoliating three times a week or up to twice a week if you have sensitive skin.

Rule three: Avoid sugar

If you value your skin, step away from the chocolate and biscuits now. “Too much sugar in the skin leads to a process called glycolisation, where the sugar attaches to the proteins in the collagen,” explains Dr Maes, Estee Lauder Vice President, Research and Development. As a result, collagen bundles can thicken and become brittle - helping to accelerate skin sagging and ageing. Your action plan? Ditch the sugary foods where possible; swap sugary cereals for porridge or sugar-free muesli and stock up on low GI foods including fruits like nectarines, apples and berries.

Rule four: Relax more

You already know it’s bad for your health, relationship and chocolate habit, but did you know stress is officially bad for your skin too? According to Clinique, stress ages skin in a similar way to external elements like the sun (hello premature ageing!) and increases its inflammation while reducing immune function. Rule five: Get year-round protection

“The sun is the number one cause of premature ageing,” warns Tom Mammone. But don’t assume this means you actually have to see it peeking through the clouds; UVA rays, largely responsible for ageing, are the same strength year-round - even on that chilly winter’s afternoon. And, “they penetrate through glass and cloud,” notes Mammone.

Rule six: Get even

When combined with dull skin, uneven skin tone was found to affect volunteers’ perceived age by up to twenty years in studies by P&G and Boots. Melanin (responsible for skin’s pigment) is the cause, but can be triggered by genetics and sun damage. “A combination approach of over-the-counter products, laser and microdermabrasion is most effective treatment approach, and you must wear sunscreen” says Dr Nick Lowe.
