Find out more about the Atkins diet plan and answer our questions to help you decide if Atkins could be the diet for you and your lifestyle.
If you want to lose weight, stay at your optimal weight or adopt a healthier, more energetic lifestyle, then the Atkins diet plan, also known as the Atkins nutritional approach could be for you.
The Atkins nutritional approach is about helping to change the way your body works; to help burn fat efficiently by reducing the amount of refined carbohydrates you eat and by eating a balanced diet with adequate levels of protein, 'good' fats and a variety of certain carbohydrates, which we call nutrient-dense carbs or 'good carbs'.
The new Atkins Nutritional Approach is based on the same principles as the original Atkins Diet, which can help you lose weight successfully, but it has been improved in order to:
Very low calorie diets should only be followed for the short term. However, this new nutritional approach is not just about dieting to lose weight; it has four distinct phases, from Induction which jumpstarts weight loss, to Lifetime Maintenance, which encourages eating habits that maintain your weight on an ongoing basis.
If you answered, "yes" to some or most of these questions, it may be that your diet is too reliant on refined carbohydrates (referred to as 'bad' carbs).
Highly processed carbohydrates (refined sugars, bread, cereals and pastries) break down more rapidly into glucose and enter your bloodstream far faster than vegetables and other 'good' carbs. These rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels can encourage your body to store the excess glucose as fat and give you hunger pangs that might mean you eat even more. Ultimately, eating too many 'bad' carbs may favour an inability to lose weight or maintain weight loss, leaving you feeling constantly hungry. When considering a new diet, it's useful to identify what you are looking for in a weight-loss plan. Read the following statements to help you decide if Atkins could be the right diet for you*.
If you agreed with some or all of these statements then the Atkins diet plan could help you lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle for the long term. A healthy lifestyle is not purely about the food you eat. Ultimately you should strive to eat a balanced diet combined with regular exercise.
*Before embarking on any diet that significantly changes your eating patterns we recommend you seek advice from a healthcare professional.
